Studies have shown that antiperspirants and deodorants are not as harmless as most people might think. The cosmetic industry uses up to 25 different aluminium-based ingredients in their products, all of which are regulatory approved. The aluminium chlorohydrate used in antiperspirants is one of the most commonly used aluminium salts.
At the beginning of the past decade several research studies have been conducted with the purpose to determine health risks caused by the use of aluminium salts in cosmetic products. The studies investigated a possible connection between the use of aluminium salts in antiperspirants and Alzheimer's disease as well as breast cancer.
A more recent study involving laboratory animals has confirmed that dermal absorption of several cosmetic products (deodorants and antiperspirants) containing aluminium causes neurotoxic effects and reduces reproductive power in men. French Agency for the Safety of Health Products points out the need to restrict the use of aluminium salts in antiperspirants because the current allowable concentration cannot guarantee health safety.
Several new scientific researches have proved the connection between regular use of antiperspirants and breast cancer.
Using antiperspirant right after shaving increases the risk further. Other studies have shown that the aluminium absorbed through the skin enters the circulatory system and then accumulates inside the brain. The scientists have therefore made the connection between this phenomenon and the Alzheimer's disease.
It used to be thought that deodorants are far more harmless than antiperspirants, however recent studies have confirmed the connection between parabens contained in many deodorants and breast cancer. The autopsy of breast cancer patients has discovered paraben in their breast tissue. For that reason experts have advised against using products that are known to contain parabens (avoid using deodorant on a daily basis?!) and to look for natural products instead (even though some of them are not 100% natural).
Our recommendation: for easier application use the deodorant stick on damp or wet skin.
